I like this game to sail over the total. Western Michigan averaged 43.5 ppg this year. While they are playing a Wisconsin defense that only gave up 15.5 ppg, there are holes in the Badgers defense and Western Michigan’s Zach Terrell finished the season with the 4th highest QB rating in the nation. His 3 interceptions were the fewest in the nation. The Broncos coach, P.J. Fleck, might take a bigger coaching job next season. He has had time for extra practices and will be putting in some new plays to surprise Wisconsin.
The weakness of the Western Michigan defense is stopping the run, and that is the strength of the Wisconsin offense. The Broncos gave up 4.7 yards per rush this season and 151 yards per game. That number would have been higher more than likely if they didn’t have so many big leads and forced teams to throw the ball playing from behind.
Wisconsin is led by running back Corey Clement who averaged over 8 yards a carry against Penn State in the BIG 10 Championship game. Quarterback, Alex Hornibrook who did not play against Penn State, is expected to be ready to play here and the Badgers can use 2 quarterbacks if they want and keep Western Michigan off balance.
Wisconsin’s pass defense was exposed in the BIG 10 Championship game. Western Michigan’s Corey Davis is #2 in the nation with 18 touchdowns receiving and is a legit NFL prospect. The Badgers can struggle against pass happy teams and the Broncos have the quarterback and receiving core to test the Badgers. With nothing to lose, I look for Western Michigan to take some shots and play aggressive.
This game is played in Arlington indoors on the turf, so weather is not an issue. I have this one finishing in the low 60’s.
