Contrarian Crusher Total - Rickenbach MLB Rotation #905 Wednesday 8* OVER the total in San Francisco Giants vs Washington Nationals @ 3:45 ET - The Nationals rank dead last in the majors for bullpen ERA this season. Couple that with the fact they do have a potent offense but also are starting a struggling starting pitcher here...and you can see why I like the over in this match-up. Yes, Joe Ross allowed only 1 hit in his most recent start but he walked 5 in that outing which lasted only 5 and 1/3 innings. The Nationals Ross has a 5.79 ERA the past 3 seasons combined. He has mostly been used out of the bullpen this season and has been hit at .323 clip in his 30 innings of work. The Washington right-hander has allowed 16 earned runs in his last 17 and 1/3 innings. The Giants are starting rookie Shaun Anderson in this one. He has been very hittable this season. Opponents are hitting .293 against him on the season and he has compiled a 5.08 ERA. Anderson has a 7.03 ERA in his 5 starts since the All Star break so things are not exactly on an uptick here either. Yesterday's game stayed under the total only because the teams went scoreless for the final two innings. In an afternoon game at Oracle Park I do not expect a repeat of that and this one should get over the total rather easily. The Giants have struggled a bit recently but they were the #1 team in the National League for runs scored in the month of July. As for Washington, they have a .352 on base percentage since the All Star break. That ranks the Nationals 2nd in the National League! Plenty of scoring opportunities expected early, often, and throughout this one. 8* OVER the total in San Francisco
