Saturday MLB Free Play from Doc’s Sports Take #928 San Diego Padres (+140) over Detroit Tigers (Saturday, 8:40pm EST) If you think the old Justin Verlander is back, think again. He enters today’s game with a 2.57 ERA and 1.14 WHIP, but don’t let that fool you. There is a noticeable difference in Verlander’s stuff and the opposition has recognized it. During the opening series versus the Royals, Kansas City centerfielder Lorenzo Cain commented that Verlander is very hittable and hasn’t regained his old form. He also isn’t getting the ball down as much as he used to, evidenced by his declining groundball rate over the last year or so. His strikeout rate is down almost 200% from last season in his first two starts. Verlander probably is still good enough to be an All-Star, but he’s being priced like one of the best pitchers in baseball. That’s a mistake and we’ll look to take advantage of here with an underrated San Diego Padres team. The Pads go with Ian Kennedy and I like what he’s thrown out there this spring thus far. He isn’t fancy but almost always pitches well enough to keep his team in the game, and that’s all we’re asking for with a home underdog in this price range. Take San Diego.
